Sculptra is a treatment based on poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which is a polymer of lactic acid. It is synthetic, biodegradable, biocompatible and immunologically neutral and its use does not require previous allergy testing.
Sculptra stimulates the fibroblasts located at the site of injection, which causes gradual, slow synthesis of new collagen fibres. This leads to improved tension and volume of soft tissues, allowing for contouring of the face, jaw and chin. The skin becomes more taut, smooth, dense and firm, and its quality improves. The result is younger looking skin, which has regained its lost volume.
Each treatment session lasts approx. 15 – 30 minutes. Local anaesthesia is used (usually using Emla cream). After treatment, there may be localised bruising, while redness and swelling may be visible for several days. It is extremely important to massage the treated areas, applying moderate pressure, for 5 minutes several times a day for up to 14 days. The massage protects against formation of small subcutaneous lumps. After 10 – 14 days the initial symptoms of the injection disappear, and we then have to patiently wait 6-8 weeks to see an improvement in the condition of the skin.
